June 25, 1950
Start of the Korean War. Forces of the North Korean People's Army invade South Korea. The United Nations calls for North Korea to end its attacks against South Korea.

(NOTE: Because the United Nations charter does not have any provisions for declaring war, the military actions in Korea are often referred to as a conflict or police action, and not a war.)

June 27, 1950
The United Nations requests that its member nations provide aid to South Korea.

June 30, 1950
American ground forces are ordered to Korea.

July 8, 1950
General Douglas McArthur is placed in command of all United Nations forces.

July 9-18, 1950
The 25th Infantry Division arrives in South Korea.

July 17, 1950
Robert McDonald leaves United States for Korea.

August 4, 1950
Transferred to 25th Infantry Division and assigned as A&P platoon leader of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 24th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division.

September 15, 1950
United Nations forces land at Inchon.

September 27, 1950
The Bangor Daily News runs a photo and the following caption: "Fights in Korea: First Lieutenant Robert A. McDonald, husband of Mrs. Margaret McDonald of 85 Holyoke Street, Brewer, and son of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Sargent of 40 Washington Street, Brewer, is fighting in Korea with Headquarters Company, 24th Infantry Regiment. A 1938 graduate of Bangor High School, he spent four and a half years in the Army during World War II, serving part of that time in the European theater of operations. He re-enlisted two years ago and went overseas about three months ago. Lieutenant and Mrs. McDonald have a son, Wayne, 10, and a daughter, Lynn Marie, 4. Referring to the war situation he informed his parents by letter this week that "everything looked good today."

End of the Korean War. A cease-fire is signed by Lt. General William K. Harrison and Lt. General Nam Il at 10:00 a.m. at Panmunjom.
