Background Information
The United States Army uses a variety of badges to designate skills and to identify specific assignments. Branch insignia denote which part of the Army a soldier belongs to, and are worn with a variety of uniforms. Enlisted members of the Army wear their branch insignias on the left side collar of their Class A uniforms. The branch insignia for enlisted personnel features the apprporiate branch symbol centered on a circular gold disc. On the right side collar is worn a circular gold pin with the letters "U.S." For officers the branch insignia is worn on the lower portion of the coat collar on both sides. The officer's branch insignia is larger and does not feature a circular background. On both sides of the upper portion of the coat collar is worn a gold pin with the letters "U.S." Branch insignia pins are not authorized for Class B uniforms. An Army trainee will wear two "U.S." pins until they have been assigned a primary military occupational speciality (PMOS) at which time they would wear the appropriate branch insignia. Certain branch insignia are authorized for officers only.
