In World War II the enlisted rank of Private had no accompanying insignia. The Pay Grade for a Private First Class was E-7. The rank of Private was eventually discontinued and replaced with the Recruit rank in 1951. The rank of Private returned in 1968, at which point it consisted of one chevron and used the Pay Grade of E-2.
