In World War II the enlisted rank of Sergeant consisted of three chevrons and used the E-4 pay grade. During most of the Korean War the rank of Sergeant consisted of three chevrons and one arc and used the pay grade of E-5. (For the first year of the war Sergeants used the WW2-style rank insignia).
